Here is the Problem I Have with Twitter
Blog: Paul Schneider's Blog | By: Mr. Paul Schneider | Released: Jul 15, 2009 04:39 PM

Well actually my problem is not with Twitter itself, it is with some of the people that use it. It seems that with the rise of people using Twitter, the creation of original content has gone down. I use Tweet aggregators to help me see the information that I am interested in. What I typically see are people retweeting the same message many, many times. Now I understand that every retweet reaches a whole new audience because the people following you are not the people following me; however, since I seem to follow people that are all in the same industry I wind up seeing a whole lot of the same things.

I think people feel they need to be saying things all the time, even if those things are not their original ideas because otherwise they don't feel relevant in the Twitterverse. I tend to go the opposite route. I don't tweet a lot. I listen intently to what others are saying, but I only interject when I have something good to say (or I do ocassionally retweet if it is really good info and I don't see 7 other retweets of the same things already). My point is that retweeting everything is not adding value to your network, over time it becomes like twitter spam. I hold a lot more respect for the people that are putting original content out there on Twitter and I listen when they have somethig to say. Some of it is great, some of it isnt. That is OK though because it is new and something I have not heard before.

Maybe I am just getting old and crusty, but with so many information sources that we have to keep up with, when I take the time to be one one, I need to get something out of it. By the way, feel free to retweet a link to this blog as much as you want. That retweeting is perfectly OK in my book!

I agree wholeheartedly.  When I was watching the #IranElection trends heavily a few weeks ago, I got tired of everyone eventually RTing everyone else.  Using TwitterFall or another website, I might see thousands of the same Tweet.  Same goes for some of the most important Iranian Tweeters.  At first, there was lots of fresh info, then eventually just tons of RTs from random people.

I don't RT very often, but when I do, I only do so if I think my friends and followers will find it interesting too; hopefully we'll start our own discussion about it.

I think the community needs to come up with some Twitter Etiquette to make sure people are tweeting and retweeting responsibly!
